Tour Toby's
When you come to Toby's World Gifts, it will be one of the most memorable experiences
of your entire trip to Myrtle Beach. What makes Toby's so different from every other store
on the strand? Come in and see!
Past Meets Present
No store on the strand is touched by history as much as Toby's is. A hallmark of our store
is the Nickelodeon Player Piano that still entertains people of all ages today! Over 50 years old, our player
piano has endured for over half a century. Using an electric powered engine, an air system with valves connected
to each instrument, and a paper roll with the songs imprinted into it, the piano plays classic songs
such as "Walk the Line" by Johnny Cash and "The Gambler" by Kenny Rogers.
Toby's also has a number of other historic items decorating the interior, such as an old waterpump-style
fire extinguisher and an antique clothes washer. Merchandise is displayed in aged curios and dressers, as
well as old-fashioned pie cooling racks and jewelry cases. Easily one of the oldest items in our store
is the old-time cash register from the National Cash Register Corporation. Dating back to 1898, it
is over a century old and is still able to function. We're proud of the heritage that is preserved in
Toby's, and we are happy to offer this experience to our customers!
First Impressions: Outside Toby's
When you first pull up to Toby's, you'll find yourself in front of an old, general store-style building.
You may notice the unique brick walkway to the stairs, the white knee-high fence surrounding the gardens, the
enclosed porches, the awesome stained glass window, or perhaps the quaint gazebo off to the side. Regardless
of what you notice, even if it's just the merchandise on the tables, it is immediately obvious that we
aren't your typical "beach gift shop" in the Wings or Bargain Beachwear tradition. Without even stepping
inside, you'll know we are much more than that.
Speaking of unique and special, the previously mentioned gazebo is a popular little piece on the outside
of our store. Sometimes you'll see an employee or two eating lunch on the bench in the gazebo while on break.
While we haven't done much more than illuminate the gazebo at night to accentuate its beauty, we hope to have
the gazebo as an entertaining spot in the coming years. This may take a while, but as the time comes closer
we'll be sure to let you know some of the unique things we'll be doing with it!
Take a Peek Inside
What is Toby's like inside? To really get the full effect, you need to come down and visit. Until then, however,
we can give you a bit of an idea. Toby's is a two-story, old-time general store redone in a way that keeps the traditional
feeling but offers so much more. Carrying many lines of products, such as Lenox, Boyd's Bears, and Yankee Candle, Toby's
puts the customer in the center of the world of unique and affordable gifts.
On the first floor you will find a wide open floor segmented by displays and counters that create a natural flow without
feeling boxed in. Enclosed porches are filled with displays of cards and children's toys on the right, home accents and home
decor on the left. Near the player piano you will find a sports area mingled in with figurines of soldiers, firefighters,
and policemen. Candles and candle accessories from various companies are found throughout, with a jewelry counter in the
center and Rhythm clocks lining the register area. Beanie Babies, Boyd's Bears, and other stuffed animals can be found
just beyond the cash registers.
Also next to the register area are the stairs leading to the second floor. Upstairs you will find tins and signs
hung along the walls that might strike your fancy. If you continue forward, you're surrounded by nautical items ranging
from dinnerware to pillows, pictures to furniture. At the end of the nautical area is a small clearance area leading into
the Christmas section of Toby's. Christmas trees, ornaments, and decorations line the shelves as you head towards our
lawn and garden area. Here you will find lawn stakes, bird baths, bird houses, and many other garden-related items before
reaching the stairs that head back downstairs.
